ASBURY PARK, N.J. -- C-8's days are
numbered.
On Saturday, a staccato series of explosions will fell the unnamed,
unfinished condominium building, a ghostly symbol of Asbury Park's blighted waterfront since
the 1980s. One part community catharsis, one part spectator event, the
12-second implosion will clear the way for a new condominium project at the
heart of a slow-moving, $1 billion makeover planned for the seaside city
where rocker Bruce Springsteen came to fame.
"It's about time," said Kenny Wilson, 46, of Asbury Park, passing by on his morning
jog Wednesday. "It's been up there too long. It's an eyesore, you
know?"
Built in 1986 as part of a $500 million redevelopment project that later
went bust, the building was abandoned with only 12 of the planned 16
stories built. C-8 got its name from the block designation used by city
planners.
Its concrete-and-steel shell, a 120-foot tall structure overlooking Asbury Park's desolate
boardwalk, became a kind of public enemy number one as the waterfront
languished, scaring off would-be beachgoers as well as investors.
"People would take one look and say, `We don't want to be down
here,"' said City Councilman John Loffredo. "They used to call us
`Beirut on the Jersey
shore.' And that's what this looked like."
In 1993, an unknown prankster scaled the building and hung a banner from an
elevator shaft that read: "Fix This Mess."
When a new waterfront developer was named in 2001, builders hoped to
salvage the steel frame and use it in the new structure.
But that plan was shelved because of problems with the foundation,
according to Dean Geibel, managing partner of Metro Homes, the Hoboken real estate
developer that plans to build a 221-unit condominium complex in its place.
Its name: The Esperanza at Asbury
Park. Esperanza means hope in Spanish.
At about 7 a.m. Saturday, Loffredo will push a plunger to set off the
implosion, which is being conducted by a demolition company whose previous
targets included Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh,
the bombed-out remnants of the Alfred
P. Murrah
Federal Building
in Oklahoma City and the Traymore Hotel in Atlantic City.
Using about 90 pounds of plastic explosives placed in 130 locations, the
charges will knife through the structure's 8,000 tons of steel beams and
let gravity to do the rest. The amount of dust will be minimal, since the
building has no masonry, save for a few concrete panels, according to Douglas
Loizeaux, vice president of Controlled Demolition Inc., of Baltimore.
The resulting pile of rubble will remain mostly within the existing
structure's footprint, he said.
Thousands of spectators are expected, according to city officials.
"This has become a spectator sport," said Loizeaux.
The city will cordon off a nine-block area around the site to protect
people from the debris and dust.
Not everyone will be happy to say goodbye.
"To tell you the truth, I got used to it," said Rita Marano, 75,
who owns the Kingsley Street Deli, right across the street. "I'm going
to feel lonely without it."

Tip #18
Home Selling Tip, Targeting Out Of State:
When you sell your home you sometimes have to put yourself in the
potential buyers’ shoes. In New Jersey many home buyers are from the
surrounding area, like New York or Pennsylvania.
Knowing this can allow your agent to
market your house more effectively.
If he/she will advertise in a New York publication they can describe
the proximity to NY. This allows
your potential Buyer Base to expand.
