For the Courier-Post
The unofficial start of the summer season is still a month
away, but things are already heating up -- literally and figuratively -- as
May proves to be a busy time at the Jersey Shore.
Ocean City's famed weather-predicting hermit
crab, Martin Z. Mollusk, will venture onto the city's beach at Moorlyn
Terrace 11 a.m. Thursday and attempt to see his shadow for the 31st time.
If he does, summer comes one week early to Ocean City,
much to the delight of vacationers and the business community. If not, no
big deal, the season arrives on time according to Martin Mollusk expert and
creator, city Public Relations Manager Mark Soifer.
"Martin has a phenomenal record," Soifer says
jokingly. "To date, he has seen his shadow 29 times and once cast a
partial shadow. That year, summer was not a week early, but came
three-and-half-days early -- in Ocean
City only. No other
shore town actually benefits from him seeing his shadow, but we do."
The event, which Soifer says has been passed "from claw
to claw" over the years, originated as a parody of Groundhog Day, and
is traditionally held the second Thursday of May.
"It's a very fun thing and a part of our gearing up for
the summer season," he said.
Highlights of Martin's career are plentiful: he was the first
hermit crab in space, flying in a tiny gondola attached to a kite. He was
accompanied to the beach by a chimp once. His wedding announcement to Molly
Shellfish was reprinted in the New York Times. He twice visited the
groundhog at the Philadelphia Zoo and presented the rodent with an array of
vegetables shaped like a heart.

Tip #19
Home Buying Tip, Online Searching:
Searching online is a very effective way to look for real estate in New Jersey, or
anywhere for that matter. Good
websites allow you to search through multiple MLS’s so you can
cover a wide range. For example
here you can Search for
NJ Real Estate.
After you find the house you are
interested in you can inquiry with the real estate agency to find out
more information or to arrange an appointment to view the house.

Tip #18
Home Selling Tip, Targeting Out Of State:
When you sell your home you sometimes have to put yourself in the
potential buyers’ shoes. In New Jersey many home buyers are from the
surrounding area, like New York or Pennsylvania.
Knowing this can allow your agent to
market your house more effectively.
If he/she will advertise in a New York publication they can describe
the proximity to NY. This allows
your potential Buyer Base to expand.
