Shore slips into holiday mode, hopes sun comes out to play

ASBURY PARK — As roadways to the Shore filled up Friday with people coming for what could be a hot and mostly sunny July Fourth holiday weekend, 14-year-old Marcia Speller seemed content as she walked toward the boardwalk's Asbury Amusement Factory with her younger sisters and brothers and their cousin, Jasmine Moure, 12, from Neptune.

"We're all getting new outfits and we can celebrate with our family — and we also can show honor and respect for the soldiers that died for us," Marcia said. "That's why I love the Fourth of July."

"And when the fireworks come, everyone forgets their troubles and shows they care about America," Jasmine added.

This weekend's about fireworks and family. School's out. Lifeguards are working full time. Restaurants and stores welcome the holiday business. A celebration's under way.

Today's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high in the upper 80s. Temperatures on Sunday could reach the low 90s with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, said Bill Christ, a meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Service at Mount Holly.

On Monday and Tuesday — the Fourth itself — it will still be hot in the mid-80s but partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the forecast.

The water temperature was 65 degrees, Spring Lake and Bradley Beach lifeguards reported Friday.

On the move

Garden State Parkway authorities expected 6,432,000 vehicles on the roadway over the holiday with the largest numbers expected on Friday — 1,384,000 — and Tuesday — 1,446,000. NJ Transit offered extra trains and buses for commuters leaving work early in New York on Friday and Monday.

On the Asbury boardwalk, Ed Gasper, co-owner with his son, Eddie, of Tides restaurant, said they plan to have entertainment today and Tuesday.

"The beach is in tremendous shape. The lifeguards are ready to go. Everything's in readiness," Ed Gasper said.

Robert Fitton, displaying a new fleet of bikes at Asbury Park Pedaler on the boardwalk, said that hot weather could mean fewer people renting bikes. But he was looking forward to seeing many people on the boardwalk this weekend.

Nearby, at the Asbury Amusement Factory, owner Bruce Glorsky watched as an 18-hole miniature golf course was being installed. He plans to have it open by the Fourth.

"July Fourth is a very special holiday for barbecues and getting together with families and friends," said Mary Boyle, 69, who has lived on Fourth Avenue in Bradley Beach for 35 years. "I think how lucky we are to be here and to be in the United States even though we don't agree with everything that happens. We have to pray for our leaders that they guide us in the right way."

Eileen McNelis of Avon, one of Boyle's older sisters, added: "It's a time to remember what our country's all about and pray for everyone who sacrificed their lives for us to have our land."

A family time

On Main Street in Bradley Beach, Winni Xiao, 31, whose family opened the Hong Kong Winni Kitchen last year, noted, "The holiday is good because all the family will be working here together."

Jose Contreras of Ridgefield Park, plopped comfortably on a beachside bench, worked his way through an amply sugar-coated funnel cake while he and his teenage daughter watched the waves and the nearby volleyball tournament in Seaside Heights.

"It's a nice place to come to," Contreras, 46, said between deep-fried bites. "We come down every year."

But they leave every year, too — preferably before the masses who they expected to see idling on the Parkway as they made the 90-minute commute home Friday night.

"When there's too many people, you get pushed," Joslyn Contreras, 16, said. "It's annoying, and you get frustrated."

Speaking of which, the Frog Bog — the game where you try to launch a floppy frog into a floating cradle — was frustrating Jessica Smith, 28, of Burlington City.

"You didn't take a picture, did you?" Smith asked with a cautious smile. "Great, you saw me stink at the frog game."

Smith and new husband, Erik — they married a week ago today — spent a few days last week in Seaside Heights and returned Friday for a last look.

"It's beautiful weather," the new Mrs. Smith said. "Why not?"

Asbury's third parade

Among the planned parades and fireworks, Tuesday will mark the third Asbury Park Fourth of July Parade, which this year will have seven floats, 18 bands, marching groups from throughout the city, four new fire trucks and firefighter units from surrounding towns.

"The parade was just something to bring the community together," said Deputy Mayor James Bruno, who started it in 2004. "The first year, we had a crowd but everyone thought it would be one of those same old parades — two trucks and a band. Now we have almost 70 different groups in the parade, and thousands came out last year to watch it."

Back on Fourth Avenue, where Marcia Speller and the other children were making their way to the boardwalk, Tyrone Speller, 12, said it is the city fireworks that he's thinking about.

"What I like is they show that big, big flag at the end," he said.

Tip #19

Home Buying Tip, Online Searching:
Searching online is a very effective way to look for real estate in New Jersey, or anywhere for that matter.  Good websites allow you to search through multiple MLS’s so you can cover a wide range.  For example here you can Search for NJ Real Estate.

After you find the house you are interested in you can inquiry with the real estate agency to find out more information or to arrange an appointment to view the house.

Tip #18

Home Selling Tip, Targeting Out Of State:
When you sell your home you sometimes have to put yourself in the potential buyers’ shoes.  In New Jersey many home buyers are from the surrounding area, like New York or Pennsylvania.

Knowing this can allow your agent to market your house more effectively.   If he/she will advertise in a New York publication they can describe the proximity to NY.  This allows your potential Buyer Base to expand.
