State releases guide to Jersey
shore towns

TRENTON - New Jersey Public
Advocate Ronald K. Chen today released a guide containing the cost,
facilities and amenities offered in New
Jersey shore towns.
The New Jersey Beach Guide contains information about daily, weekly and
seasonal fees, accessibility for individuals with disabilities, parking,
restrooms, life-guards and beach locations.
The information was gathered from municipal governments and web sites.
Chen noted that beachfront communities have a legitimate right to recoup
the unique costs of operating a beachfront in a safe, responsible and clean
manner, but past litigation has examined whether beach fees were being used
to subsidize other municipal functions.
He said New Jersey
courts have recognized that every individual has a right, under the public
trust doctrine, to access and use the beaches for recreational activities.
An online version of the guide is available by visiting www.state.nj.us/publicadvocate
and clicking on the appropriate web link.
As part of the project, feedback on the guide is being solicited from
municipal governments and the public.
Officials and individuals are invited go to the web site to give additional
information about local beaches, update or expand data and provide photos.
The website will be updated as new information and historic data is
received, Chen said.
The public can also e-mail comments about the New Jersey Beach Guide or
about any concerns regarding the shore to: beaches@advocate.state.nj.us.
